#1036 Coming Into Light
Best of Show
Marge Tucker
Norwell, MA
#1036 Coming Into Light
63” x 47”
An abundance of strips from previous projects prompted making these string blocks. I chose to use light yellow in the center and work out to orange, red and then purple. The "pieced" strings are trimmings from squaring the blocks. I finished quilting in early 2021 when it finally started to feel like the world may finally be returning to normal. The name "Coming Into Light" references both the color choice as well as hope.

#1013 Water Dance: Oconaluftee
2nd Place - Innovative

#1013 Water Dance: Oconaluftee
50” x 40”
In September 2019, I visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park, fully expecting to be blown away by spectacular mountain vistas. Yes, the vistas were spectacular, but what caught my eye was the way water danced and sparkled throughout it. Creeks and rivers that ran along-side the road, waterfalls at the end of a challenging trail; at Great Smoky Mountains National Park water becomes debutante and the Park her cotillion.

#1021 Social Distancing
65” x 44”
A stop along Russian River Road with my son inspired this thread-painted quilt. The trees were so impressively tall and my son looked so small walking in front of me. The trees are simply applique pieces of plain fabric, thread-painted to give substance, color and texture. The bottom portion is a pieced disappearing nine-patch pattern emphasizing again the tallness of the trees.

#1037 Give and Take
Honorable Mention - Innovative
Marge Tucker
Norwell, MA
#1037 Give and Take
46” x 46”
Long improvisational pieced curves in black and white were cut into squares and then sewn into half square triangles. The quilt is visually graphic with black and white curves "breaking through" the angled lines of the blocks. While quilting, I was thinking of relationships; how much compromise goes into them, how at times you take more than you give and at other times you give more than you take. Relationships are never black and white.

Best Longarm Machine Workmanship - Innovative

#1033 My Big Face
77” x 60”
I created this self portrait inspired by the painting style of Chuck Close. I first created the image using paint chips on a 1/2" grid, then I transferred the concept into fabric. Free motion quilting using multiple layers of thread rings adheres the circles to the pieced squares. Over 120 colors of fabric and 56 colors of thread were used to create the illusion. No software, paint or fusible products were used.

#2006 Lullaby ... in 3/4 Time
77” x 77”
I shadowed my husband for many months and needed something to keep me busy. These fabrics came entirely from my stash. When I completed the center block I felt she needed more color and was delighted to find this pale yellow (also from my stash) complemented my motifs so very nicely. I then added a small amount of embroidery to delineate my scallops and trapunto to accent some of my hand quilting motifs. She is a very happy quilt.

#2018 Fabricated
46” x 46”
This piece embodies most all of what I love best about quilting. The traditional pieced block is appliqued, the thrifted "silk" ties are mostly polyester, the formal quilting improvised, and nothing about this quilt is fashionable or on trend. But when we indulge in what we truly love, finding our way as we go, the inevitable result is joy.
